Confidence and creativity are at the heart of Hazlegrove Nursery and Pre-Prep where children have the opportunity to engage with expressive arts from the very early years.
The creative process starts as soon as parents engage with the school. There are plenty of opportunities for imaginary play in the Nursery including Music and Dance every Tuesday morning and Hazlegrove Squirrels, the parent and toddler group which runs on Wednesday afternoon in term time. The group provides a relaxed opportunity to spend time experiencing the atmosphere of the Pre-Prep environment whilst children play, dance, sing or have fun in the woods at Forest School.
Head of Pre-Prep, Miss Ellie Lee said, ‘Engaging in expressive arts from the earliest age enables the development of key learning skills and encourages areas of learning including communication, physical, personal, social and emotional development. The focus is engagement and connection with babies, toddlers and young children in a gentle, nurturing environment and their enjoyment and pride in performing is clearly evident. This is particularly apparent during our themed Dance and Drama days’.
There are regular opportunities for the children to perform to an audience including Harvest Assembly and Christmas Nativity, termly concerts in the intimacy of the Pre-Prep Front Hall and the spectacular Circus in the Big Top. Performing Arts are part of the curriculum from Year 1.
Rhona Matheson, the Chief Executive of Scotland’s top National Art’s and Early Years organisation, Starcatchers argued recently that, ‘10 years ago, people questioned what the point of theatre and creativity for babies and toddlers was, in 2017 people question why there isn’t more?’.
The children and staff at Hazlegrove Nursery and Pre-Prep couldn’t agree more.
