Why the Whales Came
Author: Michael Morpurgo
Publisher: Egmont children’s books
The main character, Gracie, likes building boats with Daniel and sailing them with him, going to see the birdman (Mr Woodcock) and walking the birdman’s
dog, Prince.
The setting for this story is on the Isles of Scilly. The Isles of Scilly is made up of lots of small islands such as: Bryher, Tresco and Samson. Samson is nicknamed the island of ghosts.
In this book, everyone says that the birdman is mad and nobody talks to him. Everyone except Gracie and Daniel. The more Gracie and Daniel visit him, the more they begin to learn that he is not mad just lonely. Then one day Gracie and Daniel get stranded in the fog when they go out fishing and they end up on the cursed island of Samson. When they get back they find a whale on the sand. When all the other whales join the first one on the beach they try to persuade them to go back into the sea. But will the whales go back into the sea or will Bryher be cursed like Samson?
I give the rating for this book 9 1/2 out of ten because I thought that this book was very good and I didn’t dislike any of it!
